An Analysis of Composite Numerical Abbreviations in Codex Sinaiticus Brice C Jones Abstract This study analyzes an odd pair of dots that occasionally appear with abbreviated numbers in Codex Sinaiticus. The inconsistency of the deployment of the dots begs the question of function, and this analysis attempts to answer that question by considering the scribes of the Codex, the relationship between composite abbreviated numbers and nomina sacra, and a possible reading device. I demonstrate that there is no apparent motivation for either of the scribes of the Codex to have omitted the dots. Therefore, the inconsistency, but not the function, may be explained by the fact that the scribes probably simply forgot to deploy the dots.
